O cetate veche de circa 3400 de ani descoperită la Sântana, la 28 de km de Arad, este considerată de către istorici ca fiind “Troia Carpaţilor”.Construită cu 14 secole înainte de Christos şi unică în această parte a Europei, cetatea este considerată ca fiind una dintre cele mai mari fortificaţii preistorice din Europa, din perioada „bronzului târziu”.
Istoricii supra intitulează „Cetatea Veche” a Sântanei, contemporană cu Homer şi perioada miceniană a Greciei, drept o Troia a acestor ţinuturi, făcând şi o comparaţie între suprafaţa cetăţii arădene de circa 89 de hectare şi cea descrisă de Homer, Troia având 29 de hectare, potrivit Radio Timişoara.Spre deosebire de Troia, care a fost construită din piatră, cetatea de la Sântana a fost construită din lemn şi lut.
Construcţia este complexă, având trei rânduri de fortificaţii, fiind împrejmuită de şanţuri de apărare adânci de peste patru metri şi valuri de pământ de peste 20 de metri.Săpăturile în zona Sântana au fost începute în 2009, fiind efectuate de istorici din România şi Germania, de la Institutul de Arheologie şi Istorie a Artei al Academiei Române, din Cluj-Napoca, şi Universitatea «Goethe» din Frankfurt, beneficiind şi de co finanţare din Germania. În urma săpăturilor, efectuate în special în ultimii doi ani, arheologii au reuşit să scoată la suprafaţă o mică parte din cetate. Tehnologia de ultimă generaţie şi măsurătorile magnetometrice i-au ajutat pe aceştia să o deseneze.
„Am cercetat aproximativ 55 de hectare din cele aproape 90. Şi, în urma măsurătorilor, am descoperit rezultate care ne sperie: un palat uriaş, cu lungimea de 100 de metri şi lăţimea de 40 de metri. Vrem să continuăm săpăturile şi, pe cât posibil, vrem să facem această cetate să fie măreaţă, la fel cum a fost în urmă cu peste 3.000 de ani. Pentru că trebuie precizat faptul că, la vremea respectivă, cetatea de la Sântana era o capitală a Europei”, a afirmat profesorul Florin Gogâltan, de la Institutul de Arheologie şi Istorie a Artei al Academiei Române, din Cluj-Napoca, citat de Aradon.sursa:descopera.ro
